  • Statin and target LDL <2.0 mmol/L

Part B:

Mrs. Workag is 35 year old woman, who has lived with type 1 diabetes for 18 years, and through routine testing, shows no signs of end organ damage.

What is the best approach for vascular protection for Mrs. Workag?

Reveal Answer

Because Mrs. Workag has lived with diabetes over 15 years AND is over 30 years of age, the 2018 Diabetes Canada's Guidelines recommend therapy* with:

  • Statin and target LDL <2.0 mmol/L

*Statins have the potential to cause embryopathy. Since this patient is of childbearing age, these medications should only be used in the presence of proper preconception counseling and reliable contraception in women of childbearing age. A woman’s pregnancy plans should be discussed at every visit.
